The employee quietly told Lawson, “That’s Arthur Bennett.”
Arthur had been visiting several properties personally as part of a customer-service review. He deliberately arrived without an entourage or special treatment because he wanted to see how ordinary guests were treated.
He had watched Derek help without hesitation.
He had also watched Lawson care more about keeping the valet lane moving than helping an elderly guest safely retrieve his keys.
Arthur explained that the phone call had gone directly to the company’s regional operations office.
Within minutes, Lawson was removed from his supervisory role while the incident was reviewed.
Arthur then turned to Derek.
“You didn’t know who I was,” he said. “That’s why your choice mattered.”
Derek expected to lose his job.
Instead, Arthur offered him a position helping train valet teams across the company’s properties.
Derek smiled.
Arthur simply said, “Keep treating people the same way when nobody important is watching.”
